Introduction to the business analyst profession
The business analyst is the bridge between business needs and technology solutions. They translate functional requirements from business units into technical specifications for IT teams, optimise processes and support digital transformation.
Unlike the project manager who drives the 'how' and 'when', the BA focuses on 'what' and 'why'. In an agile context, they work with the Product Owner, developers and QA testers. They write user stories, define acceptance criteria and validate deliverables.
Main responsibilities
Requirements gathering and analysis
Interview stakeholders (management, end users) to understand their needs. Organise co-creation workshops and design thinking sessions.
Process modelling
Map existing processes (AS-IS) and design target processes (TO-BE) with BPMN, UML or flowcharts. Identify inefficiencies and propose improvements.
Functional specification writing
Write specification documents: user stories, use cases, business rules, functional mockups. Define acceptance criteria and test scenarios.
Cross-functional project management
Coordinate communications between business teams, developers and testers. Run steering committees and track project progress.
Testing and validation
Define functional test scenarios, participate in user acceptance testing (UAT) and validate that delivered solutions meet business requirements.
Change management support
Train end users, write documentation and support deployment of new solutions. Gather feedback and propose adjustments.
