Negotiate salary: best practices

Negotiating gross vs net: which to choose?

Avantages
  • ALWAYS negotiate in gross: only contractual and legal reference
  • Market comparisons are made in annual gross
  • Your rights (unemployment, pension, notice) are calculated on gross
  • Gross is stable even if deductions evolve
Inconvénients
  • Do NOT negotiate in net: the figure can vary with reforms
  • Avoid comparing two offers with different statuses without recalculation
  • Don't confuse net before tax and net on your payslip
Why is the net displayed different from my true net on my payslip?
Our calculator shows 'net before income tax'. Your payslip also shows 'net to pay' which deducts payroll withholding. This withholding is not a social contribution but income tax that varies by tax status (personalized rate). To know your true net, subtract your withholding rate from the net shown here.
Are payroll deduction rates the same everywhere in France?
Yes, payroll deduction rates are identical for all private sector employees in mainland France. They are set by law and social security. Only employees in Alsace-Moselle have a slightly higher health contribution (1.50% instead of 0%) but benefit from better coverage. Overseas territories have different rates.
What is the difference between gross salary and total employer cost?
Gross salary does not represent the total cost for the company. The employer also pays employer contributions (approximately 42% of gross). For a gross of 3,000€/month, total employer cost is approximately 4,260€. That's a coefficient of 1.42. This total cost includes contributions for health insurance, family allowances, professional training, workplace accidents.
How to calculate your hourly or daily net salary?
To get the net hourly rate, divide monthly gross by 151.67 hours (35h base) to get gross hourly, then apply the gross/net ratio (~75% for a manager). Example: 3,000€ gross/month ÷ 151.67h = 19.78€/h gross, approximately 14.83€/h net. For daily: divide monthly gross by 22 days, then apply the ratio.
