About the cloud engineer role
The cloud engineer designs, builds and manages cloud infrastructure and applications. They work with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) to architect scalable, secure and cost-effective solutions that support business applications.
Cloud engineers bridge development and operations, automating infrastructure provisioning, managing cloud environments and ensuring reliability, performance and security. They work on cloud migrations, infrastructure-as-code, containerisation, serverless architectures and cloud-native solutions.
The role is increasingly central to digital transformation. Cloud engineers must master cloud platforms, infrastructure concepts, automation tools and DevOps practices. They combine deep technical expertise with business understanding of cloud economics and decision-making.
Key responsibilities
Design cloud infrastructure
Design scalable cloud architectures for applications. Define infrastructure requirements and cloud resource allocation. Design for high availability, disaster recovery and cost optimisation.
Implement and deploy infrastructure
Provision cloud resources via Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, CloudFormation). Deploy applications and services to cloud platforms. Configure networking, security and storage solutions.
Automate operations
Develop automation and scripting (Python, Bash). Implement CI/CD pipelines. Automate deployments, monitoring and scaling. Build operational efficiency.
Manage and optimise cloud environments
Monitor cloud infrastructure performance and costs. Optimise cloud resource utilisation and spending. Manage scaling, backups and disaster recovery. Troubleshoot infrastructure issues.
Ensure security and compliance
Implement cloud security best practices. Configure identity and access management. Ensure compliance with regulations (GDPR, SOC2). Conduct security assessments.
