Frequently asked questions about sales engineers

What's the difference between sales engineer and solutions architect?
Sales engineers focus on supporting individual sales cycles, understanding customer technical needs and recommending solutions. Solutions architects take broader strategic roles, designing enterprise-level solutions, managing multiple customers and sometimes implementing. SAs often have more seniority and strategic scope. Many sales engineers progress to solutions architect roles.
Do sales engineers need strong coding skills?
Strong coding isn't always essential, but depends on product. Enterprise software SEs may need minimal coding; infrastructure/developer tools SEs need deeper coding expertise. Configuration, scripting and technical problem-solving matter more than production coding. The ability to understand code and technical concepts is more important than writing production systems.
Is sales engineering a good career path?
Yes, sales engineering offers excellent career prospects. You can progress to solutions architect, sales management, product management or become a subject-matter expert. Compensation is strong with base + commission. The role provides variety (different customers, problems, technical areas). Some SEs move into sales, product or consulting.
What product domains hire the most sales engineers?
Enterprise SaaS, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), cybersecurity, developer tools and infrastructure software hire heavily. Financial technology, healthcare IT and manufacturing also need SEs. Tech-heavy products generally require sales engineers. Startups increasingly hire SEs as they move upmarket to enterprise sales.
