About the role
The Java developer is a professional specialised in designing and developing business-critical applications using the Java language and its ecosystem (Spring, Jakarta EE, Hibernate). An expert in object-oriented programming and enterprise architectures, they create robust, scalable and maintainable systems.
In the UK, Java remains one of the most demanded languages, particularly in large enterprises, banks and consulting firms. Java 17 LTS and Java 21 LTS have modernised the language with records, pattern matching and virtual threads.
The role is evolving significantly with cloud adoption (AWS, Azure, GCP), containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes), microservices architectures and reactive programming.
Application design and development
Analyse functional requirements and design technical architecture. Develop robust applications following SOLID principles and design patterns. Create REST or GraphQL APIs to expose services.
Data integration and management
Design and optimise database schemas (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle). Implement persistence layer with JPA/Hibernate or modern frameworks (jOOQ, Spring Data). Manage transactions and ensure data integrity.
Testing and code quality
Write unit tests (JUnit 5, Mockito) and integration tests (Testcontainers, Spring Test). Practice Test-Driven Development. Ensure code quality with SonarQube, Checkstyle, SpotBugs.
Performance and optimisation
Profile applications to identify bottlenecks. Optimise SQL queries and memory management (GC tuning). Implement caching strategies (Redis, Ehcache). Ensure horizontal and vertical scalability.
DevOps and deployment
Containerise applications with Docker. Orchestrate deployments with Kubernetes. Implement CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions). Monitor production applications (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK).
Security and compliance
Implement authentication and authorisation (OAuth2, JWT, Spring Security). Prevent OWASP vulnerabilities (SQL injection, XSS, CSRF). Ensure GDPR compliance and banking security standards.

- Advanced mastery of Java (8, 11, 17 or 21) and object-oriented programming
- Expertise in Spring framework (Boot, MVC, Security, Data, Cloud)
- Knowledge of relational databases and advanced SQL
- Mastery of JPA/Hibernate and persistence patterns
- Understanding of microservices architectures and REST APIs
- Knowledge of build tools (Maven, Gradle)
- TDD practice and automated testing (JUnit, Mockito)
- Basic Docker, Kubernetes and cloud knowledge (AWS, Azure, GCP)
- Understanding of SOLID principles and design patterns
- Rigour and attention to code quality
- Ability to analyse and solve complex problems
- Team spirit and effective communication
- Autonomy and proactivity in solution seeking
- Continuous learning and technology watch
- Ability to work with legacy code and refactor it
