Role Overview
The IT project manager orchestrates technology project delivery end-to-end. A true conductor between technical teams, users and management, they ensure delivery within timelines, budget and expected quality. This hybrid role demands both technical and soft skills in management and communication.
Depending on company size, they can manage one strategic project or multiple parallel projects. In IT service companies, they often work on client projects.
Scope and needs assessment
Gather and formalize user requirements. Conduct functional and technical analysis. Write specifications or user stories. Define scope, provisional budget and macro schedule.
Planning and organization
Build detailed schedule (WBS, Gantt or backlog by methodology). Form project team. Define governance and tracking instances. Identify risks and implement action plans.
Direction and coordination
Run team meetings and agile rituals. Track progress and indicators (burndown chart, velocity). Arbitrate priorities and manage changes. Remove obstacles and coordinate stakeholders.
Budget and contract management
Track spent vs planned budget. Manage supplier and contractor contracts. Validate invoices and purchase orders. Produce financial reporting.
Quality and testing
Define test strategy. Organize functional testing (UAT). Manage defects and resolution. Ensure technical and user documentation.
Production and closure
Plan and supervise deployment. Manage cutover plan and rollback if needed. Ensure transition to run and maintenance. Perform project review and lessons learned.
